The design philosophy started long before a child touched the first exhibit: at the door, with how a family was welcomed. A child splashing in the Water Gallery was building an understanding of physics; navigating Toshi's Nets, developing spatial confidence. None of it labeled. All of it intentional.
Place-based design starts with a question: what can we learn from this place? We looked at Ventura County itself: its coastline, ecology and agricultural roots. Children didn't arrive at a generic museum; they arrived somewhere that reflected them back. A Channel Islands fossil dig lets them excavate replicas of pygmy mammoth bones.
Not many careers include a moment where you are responsible for the learning experience of over one million children. As School Operations Manager, I led a team of 400+ welcoming school visitors from across the world: the intersection of international pavilions, diverse curricula, and children encountering ideas entirely new to them. Operations in service of wonder.
Not every project starts from scratch. Some of the most rewarding work begins with something already beloved, and asks how it can be made even better. Decades of community trust met cutting-edge research, ensuring a $16 million expansion didn't just add space, but deepened the meaning of every moment spent inside it. Design in conversation with history.
woo-hoo! began as a blank page. As Experience Curator, I was there from the first planning phases: developing the educational framework, overseeing construction, and training the team to understand their role was not to manage a venue but to bring an experience to life. The result: one of Dubai's most celebrated children's museums.
